First Civilization
Sumer is often called the "sudden civilization" because it developed seemingly "out of nowhere" 5,000 years ago, when the rest of the world was still living as nomadic hunter/gatherers. Sumerians developed over 100 of the "firsts" commonly attributed to "civilization."  They had everything from well-organized cities with running water, to universities, courts of law, and sea-worthy vessels. They were literally amazing.
